Possible artillery malfunctions?
When operating modern artillery, in the US army for example, are there any shell malfunctions that can occur that would result in detonation of the shell inside the gun, before firing?
No not really.
The Fuse needs to rotate a certain amount of times before arming.
The only real “malfunctions” you would get would be
1) a cook off. (the round firing its self due to the heat of the tube igniting the powder.
2) a sticker (insufficient or damaged powder not producing enough of an explosion to expel the round out of the tube. causing the round to become stuck in the tube
3) A misfire. ( primer fails to fire after being struck by the firing mechanism firring pin, caused by a defective Primer or broken firing pin
