So pistols shoot bigger bullets?
I mean im new to the army and stuff and all i got to shoot was 5.56mm rounds,
I heard 5.56mm was standard for most assault rifles.
7.62mm was standard for most machine guns with the exception of a crazy AK-47.
But when it comes to pistols, i see 9mm (in games mostly and in wiki etc), does that mean that pistols actually shoot out bigger bullets? But prolly do less damage than real guns because of the lesser impact velocity etc?
Your question is much more complex than you may think.
A bullet consists of primer, shell, powder and projectile.
The projectile is often also referred to as the bullet, since it is the part that does the damage.
Recognize that the powder is ignited by the primer, sending the projectile out of the barrel.
The shell casing is then expended, and sometimes gets reused.
The size of the shell casing determines how much powder any particular round has.
Rifle shell casings are longer, with far more powder than pistol casings.
This results in more power (and higher velocity) being behind rifle bullets.
So let us concentrate on the projectile, and call it the bullet for now.
The 5.56mm diameter NATO round has a bullet length of 45mm
The AK-47 bullet is 7.62mm in diameter and 39 mm in length (7.62×39)
The NATO 7.62mm is 51mm long (7.62×51) and is also known as a .308 caliber round.
9mm pistol bullets are usually 9×19 (9mm diameter, 19 mm long)
So as you can see, diameter and length factor into bullet design and use.
There is also bullet weight. This is stated in number of grains.
Generally speaking heavier bullets have more ‘punch’ (deliver more energy at the point of impact) than lighter bullets.
However, this is further complicated by bullet shape and material – jacketed, hollow point, core design etc etc etc.
There are almost endless resources for better understanding all this, but it is very complex.
That is just one reason that guns vary in design, purpose and usefulness.
You basic question ‘…pistols actually shoot bigger bullets…’ is flawed and the easy answer is NO.
But that answer would also be flawed.
