What is the difference between a army flight engineer and a army crew chief?
I read on ehow that 15u chinook mechanics are called flight engineers and the 15t blackhawk mechanics are called crew chiefs, is this true? Of course I know this is not when a soldier first enlist in the chosen mos but eventually with time they can try for a slot. So is there a difference between the two and is door gunner training available for both of these jobs or do they usually get another mos to do this?
There is one crew chief on a Blackhawk and two flight engineers on a Chinook. Besides that, there is more a mechanic can door on board a Chinook while in flight since most of a Blackhawk’s systems are not accessible during flight. You can monitor systems and have access to some hydraulics and such on a Chinook. Both aircraft may have gunners in combat areas, the Chinook can have 3 machine guns.
The Army requires a rank of E-5 to be a crew chief while you can become one as soon as you are qualified in the Marine Corps.
