Army Gun Salutes
What happens if you fail to salute the commanding officer in the Army?
What punishment is meted out Sarg?
Is it more if you fail to salute a Brigadier than a Colonel?
If the soldier is being flippant, does not clean his gun and the salute is just sloppy and not executed properly?
Interesting… It would fall under the Article of Insubordination.
ALSO realize that there are SOME occasions where you are NOT required to perform a hand-salute:
When in a work-detail where your hands are occupied.
When carrying items that make the salute unsafe.
In the US Navy, you do NOT salute when indoors OR uncovered (sans hat).
A GREAT example was from one of my A-school Instructors and occured back in about 1980. He had just flown a 18+ hour ASW mission in a P-3C Orion and they had landed at Okinawa. He was lugging his helmet bag, helmet, and a case with the mission notes and tapes (MARKED as classified)… they were on the “transient line” and he was crossing paths with a YOUNG 2nd LT Marine Aviator heading out to HIS aircraft.
The AW1 (E-6) nodded politely to the 2nd LT and said “Morning Sir”… the Marine then rounded on him, shouted “Salute me you G-D@mned SQUID !!”. The AW1 stated that his hands were full, that he could NOT salute, BUT in spite of his exhaustion popped tall and called out “SIR GOOD MORNING SIR !!” then did an about-face and sauntered off to the ASWOC for debriefing.
The 2nd LT grabbed the classified material case (in the AW1′s right hand, tore it free and spun the AW1 around by his shoulder…. where he met the AW1′s left fist and a .38 handgun in his RIGHT hand !! The AW1 informed the young officer to cease and desist, he was performing his duty, and BACK OFF…
The 2nd LT immediately went off to file a report and charges… the Marine MP’s went to the ASWOC to arrest the AW1 in question (who went quietly and peacefully).
In roughly 2 hours though, there was a MESSAGE from AIRPAC (Commander, Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet) to the Base Commander… the AW1 was released with a RESOUNDING apology and the 2nd LT got off with a letter of reprimand and the duty of holding WEEKLY courses in Military Courtesies.
