Army Gun Photos
Ok this a really far out history question that probably no one knows the answer but hoping someone does?
Ok, one my grandpas(the one from the left wing side of my family) told me about his grandmother’s brother who got kidapped in 1905 by the imperial Russian government. I saw an old family photo with this boy in it and he was really cute. When he was 12 in 1905 his mom sent him to some stores in the village (stetel) to buy things for the Jewish Sabbath on a Friday. He never came back. He was kidnapped by the Russian Government. The head of the town said they took him because a Russian Horse Calvary Unit needed a drummer boy. He stayed with them until 1915 when WW1 started and he stopped writing letters to home and they assumed he died. At one point the village got together some money to pay a bribe to get him back but my great great uncle refused to leave because he got to ride a horse and use a gun and sword (typical boyish behavior). My grandpa said the Russian Government from about 1890 to around 1905 used to take young Jewish boys into the army like that.
That is a process that is called “impressment” which was a very common practice in Europe throughout the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. As with many archaic traditions like that, the place they always lasted the longest was in Russia (Feudalism was still present in Russia until 1832 for example) and your story seems to be a perfect example of that. It was not something that was specifically linked to being Jewish. Impressment like that could happen to most anyone. It was basically a form of proto-draft in countries which just didn’t have the bureaucratic capacity to enforce conscription. I’m sure if you dug a little deeper you’d see your great grand uncle’s experience was far from unique.
