Is a militia the same thing as the reserves we have in Britain?
I asked if there were mistakes in the constitution and got many replies such as this
“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
This is the gun law that you mentioned..The 2nd Amendment.
You will notice the first part “A well regulated militia”…It does not say that the average citizen has the right to bear arms.”
In Britain we have a part time army as well as the regulars. You can join it as a child, be trained and go through the ranks, go on exercises etc. Many adults and children are members of the reserves. I think you are obliged to do so many hours if you join and as was discovered in the Iraq war, you may be called up for active service if the need arises.

A militia can be likened to a partisan brigade/resistance cell. They are not formally organised, have little training, equipment will consist of hunting rifles and light machine guns, answer to noone and fight to defeat an occupying enemy.
A reserve force or territorial army is used to bolster existing forces, either as individuals or units. They are called upon by the government when extra manpower is needed to reinforce operations, either at home or abroad. They are typically organised and well trained, have access to all weaponry/equipment regular units get and are controlled by commanding officers.
