Former army helicopter pilots?
Give me some links to pictures of helicopters with side mounted pilot controlled mini guns.
Hey, do we have to be Army to provide photos?
The first examples of side-mounted pilot-controlled mini guns are during the Vietnam era. They were actually controlled by the co-pilot. The co-pilot had an aiming divice which swung down in front of him. At first it was hit and miss, then someone realized the aim would be better if they had a front sight. The guns were aimed in and an ‘X’ was put on the windshield to give the co-pilot a reference.

First picture is a Zuni rocket pod holding 8 rockets. The second picture shows the 8 pod rocket launcher and the mini gun. The 4th picture shows the gun sight. The 5th is the TAT-101 chin mounted mini guns which were adapted to the Huey. The last picture is of just a side-mounted mini gun. All these are UH-1 E models. The Army used the B model for gunships. The E model was special to the Marines and Navy to resist corrosion, they were aluminum skinned versus the titanium alloy used by the Army.
The E models and B models look very similar. Both had a single large window in the side door. The E model’s fuel cap was on the port side and the B model’s was on the starboard. For you non-swabby/jarheads, port is left and starboard is right. The E models had a hoist arm above the starboard door which is fairly prominent.

The second picture shows a couple of marines next to an HML-367 UH-1E with the Zuni rocket pod and the mini gun. You can see there are Zuni rockets in the pod if you look closely.

Third picture down is the M-60 machine gun manned by the crew member. I know it isn’t what you asked for but, that was my job. I had to show it.
