Airsoft guns are classed as Imitation Firearms under UK law, they come in two varieties, Realistic Imitation Firearms and plain old unrealistic Imitation Firearms.
There is no law against the OWNERSHIP of any form of imitation firearm.
It is ILLEGAL to buy any imitation firearm if you’re under 18, and it is illegal to sell one to someone under 18.
Someone under 18 can still legally own an imitation if given it as a gift.
UNREALISTIC imitation firearms (defined in law as being more than 50% coloured bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright pink or bright purple) can be bought, sold, manufactured and imported freely and LEGALLY by anyone over 18.
It is ILLEGAL to sell (note – not buy), manufacture and import REALISTIC imitation firearms (defined as anything which looks like a gun and not just replicas of real guns) unless you fit one of a small set of criteria. Legitimate film-makers, registered re-enactors and legitimate airsoft skirmishers are all allowed to sell, manufacture and import realistic imitations providing they can prove their status.
I can only comment on the process of verifying legitimacy as an airsofter as I don’t have direct experience with the other exemptions.
To be a legit airsofter, you must play regularly at a site which holds Public Liability Insurance. Ideally you should hold a membership at your local site or be known to the site operator. The very least you can do to prove your status is to have the site operator verify that you’re a regular player. Keeping a game diary with details of your game days signed or stamped by the site operator(s) is useful.
The UK Airsoft Retailers Association have a registration scheme to prove to their satisfaction that players are legit. UK based airsoft stores who are UKARA members will not sell to non-UKARA registered players. The UKARA registration process is often mistakenly referred to as a license.
It is NOT a legal requirement to be UKARA registered, it is merely a convenience. To qualify for UKARA registration a player must play at least three games in no less than two months at a particular site. Note that that is NOT LESS than 2 months, ie; more than 2 months – this is a common source of confusion. The site operator will sign off on the player’s UKARA application and the player sends the form to a UKARA retailer to be added to the database.
There are no laws in the UK concerning the playing of airsoft. However, it is illegal to carry imitation firearms openly in public, or to carry them at all without good reason. Travelling to or from an airsoft shop or game site have both been specifically mentioned in Home Office guidelines as examples of good reasons. Naturally, guns should be transported in a suitable bag or container and not carried openly.
While it is advisable to only play on appropriately insured sites, it is legal to play on any private property, providing you are there with the owner’s permission and out of sight of the public.
As for WW2 guns, you’ll find Tommys and MP40′s in most airsoft shops, there’s recently been a K98, a STG44 and a Sten released. Shoot’n'scoot make custom Enfields, Stens and Brens, but they’re extremely expensive.
