UK Laws on Airsoft Pistols?
i am over 18 and i want to buy an airsoft desert eagle pistol.
the online shop i am buying from is based in the USA and they said they will send any order but they are not responsible for what happens in customs
what i want to know is: is it illegal to purchase an airsoft pistol just for fun target shooting etc, if i am over 18 and will it get stopped at customs if i buy one

The legal situation for importing imitation firearms into the UK is as follows:
Airsoft guns fall into two categories, realistic and unrealistic imitation firearms. To be classed as unrealistic the gun must be coloured at least 50% bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright pink or bright purple, otherwise it’s realistic.
Note, this also applies to fictional and sci-fi guns. If it looks like a gun, then it’s classed as an imitation whether there is a real version or not.
Unrealistic Imitation Firearms:
It’s legal for anyone to import an unrealistic imitation providing they’re over the age of 18. Customs will inspect your package and upon seeing that it’s an unrealistic imitation, they may release it to you, or they may contact you for proof of your age before releasing it (with the appropriate import duty and VAT charged). That’s up to them.
Realistic Imitation Firearms:
Well these are a whole other kettle of fish. As with unrealistic replicas, you must be over 18 to import one. You also need to be able to prove your status as a legitimate airsoft skirmisher. The accepted way to do this is by supplying details of a site membership. As with the above example, HMC&E will inspect your parcel (they’re well aware of the companies who ship airsoft guns, so they’re guaranteed to inspect it) and they’ll hold it.
What’ll happen is that they’ll seize the package and write to you for proof of your eligibility to import realistic replicas. You’ll have to give them proof of your status as a legitimate airsoft skirmisher.
If you are UKARA registered, you can give them that, but as they can’t access the UKARA database, they’ll likely want further proof. You’ll have to supply details of the site where you regularly play and contact details for the site operator. HMC&E will then contact the operator to verify that their site meets the requirements laid out in the Violent Crimes Reduction Act, and to verify that you’re a regular player.
If all is good your package will be released, and you’ll probably have to pay import duty etc.
If you can’t prove your eligibility, they’ll keep and destroy your gun.
They would also be within their rights to pass the case onto the CPS to investigate an attempt to illegally import a RIF. That said, they haven’t done this once in the 12 months+ since the new laws were introduced.
Still, you wouldn’t want to become the first airsofter prosecuted under the VCRA right?
