Air soft BB guns are generally a type of air gun which is specifically made to shoot projectiles. Since its first introduction in 1938, it has become a common household name in the American toy industry. Also commonly known as air guns or pellet guns they are known as BBs after the birdshot pellets which are generally of a very small size. Normally the size of a BB is 6mm in diameter. They are generally made of non metallic material and plastics to minimize the damage done by them. But some make even lead pellets. Plastic pellets are also common as they are generally used for recreation purposes. These guns are very common to people who deal in bird hunting. Modern day air soft guns are generally made of steel with a coating of copper or zinc on which to prevent corrosion. Of all the air soft guns, the Red Ryder BB manufactured by Daisy Outdoor products is the most well known one
The term BB was conceived from the word ball bearing or bullet balls. As the modern air soft guns are made of steel they use magnets to hold the pellets or else when pointed downwards the pellets would simply roll off. Traditional ones contrary to these use spring piston mechanism. The traditional 25BB daisy model BB gun ruled the American market for 50 years. Velocity of these guns is generally low and ranges from 84 m/s to 180-200 m/s. The last popular air soft BB gun used the co2 power let which generally weighed 12 Gms. The power let, invented by Crossman, uses a disposable bottle which contains 12 Gms of liquidated co2. When the gun is fired this liquid co2 evaporates form the gun which in turn launches the BB. But the velocity of these guns generally varies from place to place depending on the temperature and pressure. As the co2 temperature falls, the velocity also falls. Another common form of air soft gun is the large gas powered BB guns generally seen at some special occasions or carnivals which generally fire like machine guns.
In countries like America the age of owning this type of gun has come down to 14 yrs and 18 yrs for buying one. Laws and acts regulating the BB guns are generally that of air guns but in some countries like Canada, UK, Germany and France these guns are generally treated as fire arms, even though they are not as powerful as fire arms.
