Using a spring, an electric motor, or compressed gas to shoot BB’s, these metal airsoft rifles come in both blowback and non-blowback forms. Being the most fun to fire because of the realistic “kick-back” or recoil feature that lends realism to the metal airsoft rifle, a blowback version is often preferred over the non-blowback version. That said, a big plus of the non-blowback version is generally improved accuracy as one does not have to deal with the recoil action of the rifle. Nonetheless, nothing is quite like running off a burst of fire in a matter of seconds.

For metal airsoft rifles that use gas as the method of propulsion, green gas is most often used. Green gas, a mix of a polysiloxand lubricant with propane, is the most common method used for gas powered metal airsoft rifles. The lubricant in the green gas keeps the rifle mechanisms fully lubricated to ensure smooth firing action from pellet to pellet. Real enthusiast will purchase a propane adaptor and fit this adaptor to the propane tank to manually fill the gas chamber. Other propellants are sometimes used as well such as CO2, red gas, or HFC-134a.
